Seven new reports about how to make Europe’s food retail stores more efficient are now freely available on the SuperSmart project website. The reports provide an overview and concrete recommendations on how to map and reduce non-technological barriers, how to build new stores and refurbish existing ones, and how to select the right tools and methods to maintain high levels of energy-efficient operation, among others.
SuperSmart has published a range of freely available training reports on the following topics:

About the reports
All documents are built in a logical sequence to introduce stakeholders active in Europe’s food retail sector first to the existence of non-technological barriers and general ways on how to remove them, before suggesting concrete technologies, methods and tools to improve the environmental and cost performance of supermarkets.
Report 1 builds on findings from a European-wide survey about awareness, knowledge, social, organisational and legislative barriers and their importance for the food retail sector in five European regions.
Report 2 provides an introductory overview of the European supermarket sector, its environmental impact and implications from the F-Gas Regulation on future decisions regarding technology and refrigerant choice, before explaining common types of energy systems in food retail stores. For the latter, the impact from refrigeration, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, dehumidification and lighting systems is explained, before the report moves on to outline state-of-the-art systems and case studies from Europe and overseas.
Report 3 investigates ways on how to build a new energy-efficient supermarket. The training document covers the building design and its individual components, before zooming in on the HVAC&R systems, their layout and technology options and their individual components. Best practice examples and case studies are provided for reference. Checklists are included for an easy practical implementation of recommendations.
Report 4 takes a look at existing buildings and ways to make those more energy-efficient via the replacement of existing HVAC&R equipment, refrigerant change, additional efficiency measures for cabinets, retrofits to the building envelope or its individual elements, including walls, roofs, doors, windows or shading elements. Options for efficient lighting and renewable energy use are outlined, before providing best practice examples and checklists for easy reference.
Report 5 focuses on computational tools to help operators of food retail stores in supermarket planning, operation and monitoring. The report provides a complete overview of available tools and their advantages / disadvantages, before moving on to a step-by-step guide for relevant tasks in planning a supermarket.
Report 6 outlines technological requirements, procedures and responsibilities for an efficient operation of supermarkets. An overview of currently available monitoring and control systems is provided to allow food retail store operators select the best for each store and system layout, before best practice examples for servicing and maintenance are mentioned.
Report 7 presents available environmental labels for the food retail sector today, among them the Blue Angel, Nordic Swan, Good Environmental Choice and Energy Star label. As its ultimate goal, SuperSmart will define criteria for energy-efficient and climate-friendly stores under the EU Ecolabel (The Flower), which the report also describes.
Next: dedicated training sessions
Building on the content from the individual training reports, the SuperSmart team will develop modules covering selected topics or providing an overview of all issues to be addressed in building, refurbishing and maintaining efficient food retail stores. The developed training material will be used in tailor-made or public training events to be announced via the website soon.
